NJ Women - EWGA |
Record numbers of women are learning to play the game of golf. The most recent stats we’ve seen confirm that more than 4.4 million women are dedicated golfers - and they average over 60 rounds a year. Women spend more on equipment and travel nationwide and are gathering a larger market share each year, by using golf for exercise, to enhance their careers and social activities.
Over 420 women hit the golf courses of Northern New Jersey this summer as members of the 23 leagues offered by Executive Women’s Golf Association –NNJ. In addition, the over 550 members of this chapter of the largest, international amateur women’s golfing organization will have access to some of the finest golf courses throughout the Metro Northeast Section of EWGA. The section, ranging from Philadelphia, Lehigh Valley and Stroudsburg; from Southern NJ, Central NJ and Northern NJ; Fairfield County CT., Westchester, Long Island and Manhattan hosts over 3500 members who have opportunities to play in each chapter’s invitational at great golf courses that they would normally not have access to without EWGA.
There are a number of organizations in New Jersey that offer some form of business-women’s golf. EWGA- NNJ, takes it several steps further with a refined league structure, on-going clinics to accommodate beginner, novice, intermediate and advanced golfers and an early spring weekend-long Golf School. Members are also provided with educational seminars, instructional classes taught by LPGA and PGA teaching pros as well as business interactions and corporate-hosted events such as the Living the Golfers Life offered free through the Northern NJ chapter’s sponsor, Merrill Lynch that included workshops and clinics in this half day event.
The ability to access other chapters around the country when traveling on business or pleasure, to be able to play some of America’s top courses, makes this association very special. The creation of friendships nationwide through its national and international span has opened entrée to a much broader reach of courses and business colleagues.
Through EWGA, women have had a profound impact on golf in America – they don’t often have the luxury of a four to five-hour round of golf, but don’t want to forego the game altogether – so they don’t mind playing nine-hole rounds and the industry has noticed – greater numbers of courses are offering reduced rates for nine-hole rounds. EWGA is also a member organization of Golf 20/20 and industry-guiding professional organization made up of such organizations as PGA, USGA, LPGA, Golf Course Superintendents Association and the Golf Course Builders Association.
“The benefit of a national organization is wonderful, explained Susan Wrench, chapter VP. “When moving here from California a few years ago, I found this great group of women who welcomed me not only to play golf but to eventually become a leader in the chapter and find business links that would not have been available otherwise. I enjoy traveling and EWGA gives me the ‘reach’ to other chapters all over America and Canada for great golf.” “We had a great time playing with local EWGA members when in Florida this year. They even arranged our tee times for us all to play together on a great private course.” stated, NNJ chapter president, JoAnn Dixon.
Tammy Smithers, with Wachovia Bank found instant friends only a week after moving here from Texas when she registered as a new member to play in the Chapter Championship.
Building businesses around golfing buddies is not new but for women to be able to do it as efficiently and effectively has become easier and more fun.
“We currently have three host clubs here in Northern New Jersey that have supported our development as chapter – now 13 years old with several other courses that have applied to become host club partners as well. The chapter has reciprocated with their host clubs by not only doing organizational business with them but by actively promoting those courses for member usage for play, lessons and corporate meetings and activities. In addition we have actively promoted our sponsors who believe in what we are doing.”
Offered Jane Barone, long time member and chapter Secretary. “Farmstead Golf and Country Club, The Meadows, and Paramus GC are our current host clubs. They are all women-friendly courses that accommodate different levels of play.”
